ChromoDB publishes its first dataset through GBIF

We are pleased to announce the first publication of ChromoDB – Chromosome Database for Plant Cytogenetics through the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).

This initial release makes more than 206,000 plant chromosome records openly accessible through one of the world’s leading infrastructures for biodiversity data. Each record combines chromosome information with taxonomic and bibliographic data, providing links to the original sources whenever available. Each GBIF record also includes a direct link to its corresponding page in the ChromoDB website at database.chromodb.net, where additional information about the taxon, chromosome number, bibliographic source and record curation is available.

The publication represents a major milestone in the development of ChromoDB. Considerable effort has been devoted to standardising taxonomic names, linking records to accepted plant names, improving bibliographic traceability and distinguishing chromosome counts verified from original publications from records that still require further review.

ChromoDB is conceived as a continuously evolving research resource. The dataset will therefore be progressively expanded and corrected as new publications are incorporated and historical records are reviewed.

Publication through GBIF improves the accessibility, interoperability and long-term visibility of these data and provides a stable, citable record of each published version.

This first release is also an important step towards a more detailed scientific description of ChromoDB, its sources, structure and curation procedures. A data paper is currently being prepared for submission to the Biodiversity Data Journal.

ChromoDB is developed by the Botany Section of the Department of Biology, Health and Environment at the University of Barcelona.
