New ChromoDB dataset on Zenodo: 50 years of chromosome records from The Iranian Journal of Botany

Fritillaria chlorantha (endemism with 2n=24)

We have released on Zenodo a curated dataset of all original chromosome-number records published in The Iranian Journal of Botany from 1976 to September 2026, compiled by Joan Simon, Maria Bosch (Universitat de Barcelona) and Saeedeh Sadat Mirzadeh Vaghefi (National Botanical Garden of Iran, Tehran).

What it contains

  • 810 original cytogenetic records from 86 publications, covering 680 accepted taxa and one interspecific hybrid.
  • Names standardised against Plants of the World Online (POWO). The names and chromosome numbers as originally published are retained for traceability.
  • A comparison with ChromoDB: 295 records, involving 276 taxa, correspond to the earliest year currently represented in ChromoDB for that taxon. This is a year-level comparison, not a claim of publication priority.
  • A distribution classification for the Iranian flora: 130 taxa endemic to Iran and 65 regionally restricted.
  • A table of the 29 taxa with divergent chromosome numbers.
  • A README, a data dictionary and a corrections.csv file that documents every correction made to the source data.

A call to specialists

Some distribution assignments, flagged in the evidence_basis field, still need taxon-specific review. If you work on the Iranian flora, we would welcome your corrections and comments.
